    The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) is the single national entrance exam for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, BVSc & AH and other undergraduate medical and dental programmes across India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) once a year (typically in May).

    NEET UG 2026 will see approximately 23–25 lakh registered candidates competing for ~1.1 lakh MBBS seats and ~26,000 BDS seats across India — making it the largest medical entrance exam in the world by participation.

    Counselling is two-tier: 15% All-India Quota (AIQ) through MCC for AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities, and AIQ seats in state colleges; 85% State Quota through respective state counselling boards. AIIMS Delhi and other top AIIMS, plus Maulana Azad Medical College, are the most coveted seats.

    Exam Pattern

    NEET UG is a 200-minute pen-and-paper offline OMR-based exam with 180 questions worth 720 marks (4 marks per correct answer; –1 for wrong). The paper has three subjects — Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany + Zoology).

    Section A vs Section B: Section A is mandatory (35 Q per subject). In Section B (15 Q), you attempt only 10. Mode: Offline OMR-based, pen-and-paper.     Class 11: Physical World & Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work-Energy-Power, Motion of System of Particles & Rigid Body, Gravitation, Properties of Bulk Matter (Mechanical, Thermal), Thermodynamics, Behaviour of Perfect Gas & Kinetic Theory, Oscillations & Waves. Class 12: Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current & Magnetism, EMI & Alternating Currents, EM Waves, Optics (Ray + Wave), Dual Nature of Matter & Radiation, Atoms & Nuclei, Electronic Devices.

    Chemistry (Class 11–12 NCERT)

    Physical Chemistry: Some Basic Concepts, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, States of Matter, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Redox, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry.     Preparation Tips & Strategy

    1. NCERT is 80–85% of NEET — Read Cover-to-Cover

    Both Class 11 and 12 NCERT Biology, Chemistry, and Physics textbooks must be read 4–5 times. NEET 2024 had ~85% of Biology questions directly from NCERT lines. Highlight every line in NCERT Biology — this is your bible. Solve NCERT exemplar problems too.

    2. Biology — Highest Weightage, Highest Scoring

    Biology = 360 marks (50% of total). Most NEET toppers score 340–355+ in Biology by mastering NCERT word-by-word. Make a 200-page short notes file from both Class 11 + 12 NCERT Biology. Revise it 6–8 times before exam.

    3. Physics — Concept First, Then Speed

    Physics is the toughest section for most NEET candidates. After NCERT, use HC Verma + DC Pandey for problem variety. Practice 15–20 problems daily per chapter. Time management is critical — 50 min for 45 Q means ~67 sec per question.

    4. Chemistry — Three Distinct Streams Need Distinct Strategies

    Inorganic Chemistry: rote-memorise from NCERT (90% direct questions). Physical Chemistry: practice numerical problems (use OP Tandon / N Avasthi). Organic Chemistry: master mechanisms + name reactions + isomerism (use MS Chouhan / Himanshu Pandey for problems).

    What is the NEET UG cut-off?

For MBBS in government colleges via 15% AIQ, expected cut-off is 600+ for General; for top govt colleges, 670+. SC/ST/OBC categories have lower cut-offs (50th percentile = ~118 marks). Cut-off varies dramatically between AIQ and state quota.

    How does 15% AIQ vs 85% State Quota work?

    15% of seats in all government medical colleges are pooled into All-India Quota — counselled by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) under DGHS. Any NEET-qualified candidate can apply across India. The remaining 85% are State Quota, counselled by individual state authorities — typically requiring state domicile or other state-specific eligibility. Private/Deemed colleges have their own criteria.

    Is NEET in 2026 going CBT (online)?

    NTA has discussed transitioning NEET UG to CBT (Computer-Based Test) mode, but as of the latest available NEET 2026 notification, the exam continues in offline pen-and-paper OMR mode.
