The stenographer typing speed requirement has two parts that most aspirants confuse — shorthand dictation speed and transcription typing speed. They are different things, measured differently. Here's the exam-wise breakdown for SSC, RPSC, HSSC and other stenographer recruitments.
| Post | Dictation Speed | Transcription Time | Typing Speed (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC Stenographer Grade D | 80 WPM | 50 min Eng / 65 min Hindi | ≈ 40 WPM Eng / 30 WPM Hindi |
| SSC Stenographer Grade C | 100 WPM | 40 min Eng / 55 min Hindi | ≈ 40 WPM Eng / 30 WPM Hindi |
| RPSC Stenographer (Rajasthan) | 80 WPM (Hindi) | As per notification | ≈ 25–30 WPM Hindi |
| HSSC Stenographer (Haryana) | 80 WPM | As per notification | ≈ 30 WPM |
In a stenographer skill test, the examiner reads (or plays back) a passage at the prescribed dictation speed (80 or 100 WPM). You record it in shorthand. You are then given a fixed transcription window to type back the dictated passage on a computer in English or Hindi.
So dictation speed (80/100 WPM) is the listening/shorthand benchmark, and typing speed (≈ 40 WPM Eng / 30 WPM Hindi) is what you need at the keyboard to finish transcription in time.

80 WPM (Grade D) or 100 WPM (Grade C) shorthand dictation speed, plus around 40 WPM English or 30 WPM Hindi typing speed for transcription.
Yes — SSC, state PSCs and most High Court stenographer recruitments still test shorthand dictation. The transcription is computer-based now (no longer typewriter), but shorthand recording is mandatory.
