The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year (January and April sessions) for admission to undergraduate engineering, architecture, and planning programmes at the 31 NITs, 25 IIITs, and 30+ Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced (the IIT entrance).
JEE Main 2026 will see approximately 14–15 lakh registered candidates per session competing for ~50,000 NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats and ~2.5 lakh seats across other state-level engineering colleges that accept JEE Main scores.
The exam offers three papers: Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), Paper 2A (B.Arch), and Paper 2B (B.Plan). Counselling for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats is conducted by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) — a unified counselling for IITs (via JEE Adv) + NITs/IIITs/GFTIs (via JEE Main).

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) is a 3-hour CBT with 90 questions worth 300 marks. Each subject (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) has 30 questions — Section A: 20 MCQs (with negative marking) + Section B: 10 NAT (Numerical Answer Type, no negative marking).

Two attempts per year: January + April. The better of the two scores is used for ranking. Percentile-based scoring: Raw marks are normalised across sessions to compute percentile.

Preparation Tips & Strategy
1. NCERT First, Then Reference Books
NCERT Class 11+12 covers ~70% of JEE Main syllabus. Read NCERT cover-to-cover. Then move to reference books: HC Verma + DC Pandey (Physics), Cengage / Arihant (Maths), NCERT + MS Chouhan (Chem). Don't skip NCERT for the lure of high-end coaching material.
2. Solve 20 Years of JEE Main + AIEEE PYQs Subject-Wise
JEE Main recycles concepts heavily. Solving last 20 years' PYQs (including pre-2013 AIEEE) reveals frequent topics, depth, and trap patterns. About 30–40% of every JEE Main paper has questions conceptually rooted in PYQs. Aim for 80%+ accuracy in PYQ practice.
3. Two Attempts Strategy — Don't Burn the First
JEE Main has two attempts (January + April). Most successful candidates use January as their "real" attempt and April as backup. Don't treat January as practice — many top scorers have done their best in the first session. April attempt benefits those who improve significantly.
4. Time Management — 2 Min Per Question
You have 180 min for 90 Q = 2 min/question. In practice: spend ~30 sec on easy MCQs, 1.5 min on medium MCQs, 3 min on tough/NAT. Skip and return — never get stuck. Aim to attempt 75+ confidently.

How many attempts can I make in JEE Main?
There is no overall limit on the number of years you can appear, but JEE Main eligibility for IIT/NIT admission is restricted to candidates who passed Class 12 in the current year or in the previous two years. So practically, you can give JEE Main twice in the year you pass and twice each in the next two years — totalling 6 attempts spread across 3 years.
