Exam Pattern

Negative marking in Prelims: 1/3rd of the marks allotted to the question are deducted for every wrong answer. CSAT is qualifying — you must score at least 66/200 (33%) to be evaluated for the GS Paper I cut-off.

Mains GS Paper I
Indian Heritage and Culture; History and Geography of the World and Society. Includes Modern Indian History (mid-18th century onwards), Post-Independence Consolidation, World History (Industrial Revolution, World Wars, Decolonisation), Indian Society, Salient Features of World Physical Geography, Distribution of Key Natural Resources, Geographical Features and their Location.
Mains GS Paper II
Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations. Preparation Tips & Strategy
1. Build a Strong NCERT Foundation First
Read NCERTs (Classes 6–12) for History, Geography, Polity, Economics and Science. NCERTs give you the conceptual base and a large fraction of Prelims questions are direct or applied versions of NCERT content. Aim to finish all relevant NCERTs in the first 60 days of preparation.
2. Use One Standard Source Per Subject
For Polity — Laxmikanth. For Modern History — Spectrum / Bipan Chandra. For Geography — G.C. Leong + NCERT. For Economy — Ramesh Singh / Sanjeev Verma. Don't change books mid-preparation; revise the same standard source 4–5 times.
3. Read One Newspaper Daily — The Hindu or Indian Express
Spend 60–90 minutes daily on a quality newspaper. Make short notes under GS subject heads (Polity, Economy, IR, Environment, S&T). Current affairs span the last 12–18 months for Prelims and the last 18–24 months for Mains. Use a monthly compilation (Vision/InsightsIAS) to revise.
4. Solve 10 Years of Previous Year Papers (PYQs)
PYQs reveal UPSC's pattern, the depth needed and recurring themes. Solve Prelims PYQs subject-wise; for Mains, attempt model answers within the 7-minute-per-question timeline. Around 30–35% of every Prelims paper is conceptually rooted in PYQ themes.
5. Take Full-Length Mock Tests in the Final 90 Days
Attempt at least 25 full-length Prelims mocks in the last three months — under timed conditions. After each mock: 30 minutes attempt + 90 minutes analysis. Track accuracy by subject, attempt range and confidence-vs-correctness ratio.
6. For Mains — Answer Writing Practice From Day One
Mains is an answer-writing exam. Start with 1 question/day from the second month. Build up to 4–5 GS questions/day in the last 60 days. Get answers reviewed by mentors / peer groups. Stick to word/space limits — 150-word answers in 6 mins, 250-word answers in 10 mins.

Is there negative marking in UPSC Prelims?
